On Saturday, January 21st, Dorchester House held a special celebration of the Year of the Dragon for Vietnamese families of children with autism. Organized by a support group under the umbrella of our Fields Corner Thrive program, the party was a safe and welcoming way for families to celebrate the Tet. Many thanks to Mayor Menino, who visited the party, and our own CEO, Joel Abrams.

Finally, a great big thank you goes out to organizers Oanh Bui, BicPhuong Do, Tuyen Nguyen, Marika Michelangelo, Michelle Nadow, and many others who helped make this heartwarming event possible. For more photos, view the slideshow below.

Thanks to all who attended the Inaugural Masquer-Aid Ball!
The first-ever Dorchester House signature event — the 2011 Masquer-Aid Ball — was a smashing success! We raised over $116,000, and all proceeds from the Masquer-Aid will benefit Urgent Care services for our over 21,000 patients plus non-patient community members in need of accessible care, so thank you for your support!

Preventive Care and Social Determinants of Health (via WBUR)
“What makes or keeps us healthy often has nothing to do with what happens in our doctor’s office or a hospital.” This observation by WBUR’s Martha Bebinger is one of the cornerstones of the community health center movement, which is driven by the fact that transformational care for local populations must take into account the whole person — all the aspects of a person’s life outside of the exam room that affect health.
Ms. Bebinger’s article in particular highlights the role preventive care plays in improving health outcomes AND reducing overall costs, and how the definition of “preventive health care” may be widening to include more home visits and nontraditional services. Dorchester House patient Khristia Kenney and her case manager Marika Hewes are mentioned in this context. To read the full article, click here.
