How do I get a referral for specialty care outside of DotHouse Health?
Your primary care physician can refer you for specialty care at many Boston-area hospitals. Below is a step-by-step process for referrals:
- Set up an appointment with your primary care provider. When scheduling your appointment, please inform the staff that you are interested in a referral.
- At your appointment, please discuss your need for specialty care with your primary care provider.
- If specialty care is approved, your primary care provider will write a referral for a specialty care visit at a specific hospital. If you would like to select a different hospital for the specialty visit than what your provider has selected, please call our Managed Care department after you have received the referral. and they will change the facility if your provider approves.
- The referral will be sent to our Managed Care department, who will schedule the actual appointment and send your information to the specialty care provider, unless you prefer to do so yourself.
- Our Managed Care department will send you an appointment notification. Depending on the date of your appointment, they will notify you either by phone or by mail.
- If you choose to schedule the appointment yourself, your primary care provider will give you a copy of the referral. After booking the appointment, please call the Managed Care department with the appointment date and doctor, so they can generate an insurance referral, if necessary.

Do I need a referral before I receive specialty care services?
Yes, if one is required by your plan. You must make sure that all referral information is completed before your appointment for specialty care. If not, you may be charged for the cost of specialty care. Please note that many insurance carriers do not cover costs retroactively if your referral is received after the appointment, or will do so only up to a certain time limit (generally 90 days).
